It's been three months since we first decided to find out which Minnesota law firm web pages people visit most. This April 1999 edition of our Minnesota Law Firm Web Site Rankings includes the first ever relative rankings of Minnesota law firm web sites as a whole as well.

Fifteen firms participated. Two new large firms, Briggs & Morgan and Kinney & Lange, joined the group of participating large firms. (Kinney & Lange's site opened April 23. The firm submitted estimates based on April-partial May results.)

Our rankings are the only tool for members of the Web community interested in learning where others increasingly are heading when they want information from and about Minnesota law firms.

Our rankings are also the only tool available to Minnesota law firm web publishers who want to find out how they are faring traffic-wise in comparision to their peers.

Here's what we did. We invited firms headquartered in Minnesota as well as firms headquartered in other states that maintain offices in Minnesota to participate. (These are the firms we list in the Directory of Minnesota Law Firms on the Web.)

We asked firms to voluntarily report overall site page views for April. We also asked how many page views their home page URL received. And we also asked firms to report page view numbers for up to three additional frequently visited interior pages.

Rankings reflect worldwide traffic. Some participating firms have offices in other states and countries. Some activity may be generated by firms' personnel using their own sites. No attempts have been made to adjust for these factors.

The survey is dependent on accurate self-reporting by firms of information reported from their web server logs. We did not want "hits" -- we requested "page views" or "page impressions." On those occasions when we asked for clarifications, participating firms were highly cooperative.

We report ranked results in two classes: (a) large firms and (b) small firms/solo practitioners. (For this purpose, we defined large firms as those with more than twenty attorneys in all their offices.)

Our understanding with participating firms is that we will publish relative rankings but not actual figures from firms' web server traffic logs.

All rankings are based on information voluntarily reported by law firms for visits to the individual pages listed above during the month of April 1999. Other law firms who might have been eligible for inclusion in these rankings did not respond or declined to participate.
